Lighting control in professional lighting generally refers to the ability to adjust the amount of light produced by a luminaire after installation. The most important advantages of lighting control have always been energy saving and adjusting the light output to suit the environment.
These basics have not changed in the last twenty years, but the development of computers and lighting technology has created a huge number of new features for control. This type of modern lighting control is commonly called smart lighting control.
Smart lighting control in professional lighting most often consists of small controllers attached to the luminaire, which communicate via data networks with each other and with a control service in the cloud. However, smart lighting is much more than that.
When a lighting control system is supplemented with a cloud service optimized for its purpose, a few specific sensors, and luminaires capable of creating light at different wavelengths, we arrive at where we are now. This makes it possible to build an autonomous system that, in addition to time-based automation, can actively monitor the environment and thus identify, for example, the level of natural light and the number of people or cars on the road.
Based on these features, the system can automatically adjust the amount and color of light, saving energy, reducing light pollution, and creating a pleasant environment for the entire ecosystem. The smart system also stores data in a cloud service, from which it is possible to monitor, among other things, the power consumption of the luminaires or immediately receive information about possible maintenance needs of the luminaires.
A truly intelligent lighting control system enables clear savings in energy and life cycle costs of lighting. By always keeping the quantity and quality of light at an optimal level, you can save energy up to over 50% compared to equally efficient ON/OFF LED luminaires. In addition, the lifespan and maintenance interval of the luminaire can be extended by up to several years.
